The 2014-15 Hampshire Solent Museum Development 'Training Bursary' scheme closed on 31 January 2015, after a very successful year which brought many high quality and innovative applications.
Seventeen bursaries totalling £9,000 have been awarded during the year. Due to a number of partnership applications, more than 20 organisations, large and small, independent and public, have benefited. Successful lead applicant museums were:
- Burseldon Brickworks Industrial Museum
- Carisbrooke Castle Museum
- Cowes Maritime Museum
- Dimbola Museum & Galleries
- New Forest Centre
- Gilbert White's House & The Oates Collections
- Hampshire Cultural Trust
- Mary Rose Museum
- National Motor Museum

Although final attendance lists from some of the partnership training events aren't in yet, we can confirm that other museums expected to benefit through being part of partnership applications include: Brading Roman Villa, Dinosaur Isle, The Diving Museum, Jane Austen's House Museum, National Museum of the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines Museum. All in all, 96 individuals - staff, trustees and volunteers from Hampshire Solent museums - will have obtained places at training courses, conferences or study visits through these awards.
How are successful applicants using their learning to drive improvement in their museums? Here are a few examples:
Applying project and people management methodologies to facilitate the next phase of conservation of the Mary Rose.(Mary Rose Museum)
Incorporating storytelling and drama into community engagement and learning programmes (Hampshire Cultural Trust)
Skilling up new staff and volunteers in the appropriate handling and care of collections (Gilbert White's House & The Oates Collections)
Visit the Case Studies section to find out about how some of our successful applicants have used their bursaries and get tips on how you can apply the learning in your museum.
A new style 2015-16 scheme will open in April, when updated criteria and application materials will be published and announced via the Newsletter.
